A senior official of the company said the GSPL sees untapped demand for gas in several places along the pipeline’s route.“Currently, there is no network to supply natural gas to Jalgaon, Nagpur, Raipur, Bhubaneshwar and Paradip,” the official said.“This is the main reason why we have identified this route for expansion.”The GSPL official said that apart from fuelling industrial growth, the pipeline will also help in the development of backward areas along the route.
Amravati, Nagpur and Bhandara in Maharashtra, Durg, Bhilai and Raipur in Chhattisgarh and Cuttack, Bhubaneshwar, Anugul and Paradip in Orissa are among the major demand centres identified by the company.
The GSPL has held discussions with a number of companies, including Mahindra and Mahindra, Bhilai Steel Plant and ACC Cement, for sale of natural gas.
“From the past two-three years, RIL has been weighing the option to set up a 5 mtpa LNG terminal at Sikka near Jamnagar, close to Moti Khavadi where it runs the world’s biggest refining complex,” said an RIL official, requesting anonymity.
“The company is expanding by setting up a petrochemical complex at Jamnagar and will require about 2.5 mtpa for captive purpose.”Presently, RIL imports costly gas on a spot basis from LNG terminals at Dahej and Hazira, both in Gujarat.
It is the largest buyer of LNG in the country, importing 2-3 spot cargos every month for its refinery, according to an official working with the Gujarat Maritime Board, the regulator for all non-major ports and jetties in the state.“GAIL is entirely dependent on availability of natural gas.
